I've been wanting a thread to cover many things than just weapons alone. I like prepping and survival gear. It doesn't take an apocalypse to be ready for survival. It can be something as simple as a tornado, flood or similar act of nature to knock your power out. If it lasts for more than a few days, you may have hostiles coming to you for what they think you may have. In a disaster zone people will kill over a loaf of bread if civilization is not restored quick enough by local, State or Federal Governments.
I know a couple of guys that went hiking on Svalbard many years ago, but they only brought hunting rifles. Not sure how practical rifles would be at close range if an ice bear attacked the tent a night, but I recall the hikers also used trip wires and rattling cans as alarms.
It's funny you mentioned Svalbard ( Spitsbergen ). I just watched a Dutch movie called Nova Zembla ( 2011 ) that dealt with Dutch explorers trying to find a northwest passage ( above Russia ) to the Pacific in 1596-1597. They discovered Spitsbergen on 17 June 1596 as they went north and then eastward, wrecking the ship on the Novaya Zemlya.
