I remember this story when it came out. It's incredible that he survived in that air pocket and that they found him in time. If he had attempted to swim to the surface he would not have made it since he was too far below the surface to free swim. Even if he did, he still would have died due to getting the "bends" from that depth.

He got out of there the only way possible to survive. Truly amazing and extremely lucky.

You're absolutely correct. While 30 meters (like this shipwreck) would be easy for freedivers (wearing fins), they don't inhale compressed air at depth and thus has no problem with nitrogen.

That made me curious - could the shipwrecked guy have avoided decompression sickness if he'd swum to the surface right away? According to PADI's dive table, you can remain at 25 meters for 23 minutes without needing any safety stop during ascent. 30 meters permits 20 minutes, but also requires/recommends a 3 minute safety stop at 5 meters. But in an emergency you'd of course risk skipping the safety stop.

The real danger in that scenario might be finding your way out of the wreck. Not only was it resting upside down, making it confusing to navigate, it also went down early in the morning and should be almost completely dark inside. Also the hatches were locked...

I suppose the absolutely worst strategy would be to first stay for hours in the wreck (all the while becoming weaker and absorbing nitrogen), and then attempt an ascent after that.
