Subnautica

Anyone played this game? Tried to watch a few YT-videos (despite the annoying babbling of the players) and the graphics seemed a little crude by today's standards, is that correct?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subnautica

"Subnautica is an open world survival adventure game developed and published by Unknown Worlds Entertainment. It allows the player to freely explore the ocean on an alien planet, known as planet 4546B, collecting unique resources to survive.
...
The main objective of the player is to explore the game's world and survive the dangers of the planet while at the same time following the story of the game. Subnautica allows the player to collect resources, construct tools, bases, and submersibles, and interact with the planet's wildlife."

I put an hour or so into it when it was back in early access at the time I liked it and decided to wait to play it when it was completed, It appears to be very different now though, hopefully in a good way.

I might actually take the plunge in that game later this fall. If so it will be the first new one I get for over a year (after spending like $2000 on my new gaming PC last year).

This game is great! Gameplay is all about exploration, scavenging, and crafting gear to enable even more exploration and scavenging. You're more or less left on your own, with almost no handholding. The game doesn't even use mission objectives, instead you need to use your common sense to figure out what to do.

I did misunderstand the in-game clues a couple of times, causing my game to be about three times longer than necessary while I kept wondering if it was broken somehow. But even then it was still a mostly enoyable experience.

Crafting can also get a bit tedious at times, especially when you don't know what things you really need (far from everything), constantly interrupted by the need to find food (your character eats like a pig) or get air. Your inventory is very limited in size, further complicating things.

The gameworld is just one very large level, with environments ranging from shallow coral reefs to dark abysses and caves, teeming with lots of different interesting creatures. Graphics are a bit uneven, but appear much better when playing than when watching Youtube videos, and although man-made equipment looks a bit plasticky you'll mostly watch the nature anyway.

This is easily the best first-person game I've played since Stalker. Gameplay-wise you could say it's Stalker on steroids, though the environment and style is totally different. Highly recommended!

It sounds pretty good, I'll give it another go now it's finished, They were giving away free copies of Subnautica on the EPIC platform a few months back but I missed it which is a shame, I do love a good freebie.

There's also a new Subnautica title in Early Access named Subnautica: Below Zero so one to keep an eye on.

I thought that one was finished too. Don't want to know too much about games in development, in case the developers change or remove things in them that you liked.

Not a bad price but I already own it on Steam so I won't buy it elsewhere unless it's DRM free & dirt cheap.

Good point, I don't play Early Access games that much, I do buy them though, usually because the games on sale.

There are three difficulty levels. On the easiest level I recall you don't have to eat or drink (perhaps too simple), while the hardest level forces you to restart the whole game if you get killed (perhaps too hard for your first playthrough). I used medium.

There is no brightness setting in the game, instead you are limited to three "Color grading" presets. Of these, only "Filmic" results in realistic darkness e.g. at night. More darkness of course increases difficulty quite a bit.

Gameplay is realistic enough (with some eye-rolling exceptions) to create almost emergent challenges. For example, when using a vehicle you must watch out so you don't end up with an empty power cell far away from your base. Once I got the solar power upgrade this risk was reduced, except of course that solar power doesn't work in deep water. I realized this a bit too late on one expedition, barely making it back to the surface before the power cell went to zero. Since it was still night, I then had to wait for sunrise. By then I also realized that vehicles can't recharge power cells once their completely empty (a bug?). This meant I now had the option of swimming back to my main base and build another power cell (a long round trip), or swim in the opposite direction to a nearby outpost --except that the necessary raw materials for power cells where not available in that area. Maybe I could at least build a charger there? I swam there to check, but alas it turned out the area lacked materials for that too... Fortunately I then remembered that I had another vehicle parked nearby, so I simply borrowed its power cell and was finally able to salvage the first one.

That's just wrong. People should be allowed to speak or write how they feel as long as it's coming from an individual and not speaking on behalf of the Game ( or whatever ) they represent. People should be allowed to express their opinions or beliefs regardless of whether it's a popular or socially acceptable/approved by sjw-type bullies. Like any of this had to do with the great work he had done on the Game.

According to the fired guy “They began asking me how I would react if they hired a Muslim or trans person. I said I’d debate them like anyone else on the team if I disagreed with them,” he said. “They said that this would create an unwelcoming working environment and that they see it as a problem that almost only white men are working there, and they need more diversity and that what I said would make that difficult to achieve.”

...which is utter nonsense: his opinions are not extreme at all compared with those of people from any third world country --prejudice against Moslems is more or less the norm among (non-Moslem) Africans and Asians, ditto for LGBT among Africans. So in the unlikely event that the company hired both a Moslem and a trans person, the environment would hardly become more "welcoming", probably less so. That's not to say conservative Europeans, Moslems and LGTB people can't work professionally together, in fact that's often the case in many Western workplaces. The only ones unable to create a welcoming environment seem to be SJWs.

But I don't think the Game Director (that fired the sound engineer) is an SJW himself. According to Kotaku, "The tweets appear to have been discovered following the resurfacing of a 2016 poll made by game director Charlie Cleveland. The poll asked if players would rather have the ability to “play as a woman” or have developer Unknown Worlds “improve [the] core game”", which sounds like an ironic question to me.

I can only conclude that the company sacrificed their sound engineer as a scapegoat, being both too cowardly to defend his freedom of speech and too hypocritical to admit that the real reason was fear of losing profit due to bad SJW-publicity. In any case I doubt the firing has made their working environment more "welcoming".

All but finished my second playthrough. This time it just took about 40 hours without rushing, due to higher efficiency on my behalf. I roughly remembered key locations and resources, but had to rediscover most of the minor locations.

I think the animals could have been more dangerous. For some reason they do more damage to your submarine than to your unprotected character, which doesn't make sense and makes the game unnecessarily easy.

Most animals stay withing their designated area, but it is possible to change that in a couple of ways. One way is to disturb some monster fishes, which makes them resettle to a new areas. Another way is by raising fish from eggs in aquariums and release into the wild, with sometimes interesting results. Some creatures also change behavior during the plot progress.

The writing is refreshingly minimalistic (in this gaming era of pretentious plot writing to cover up mediocre gameplay). We don't get to know anything about the protagonist's past, even his name is only mentioned once (I forgot it right away). Subnautica also keeps the general lore on a basic but functional level, focusing more on gameplay. It does have a few silly parts, such as a badass female merc, but most of it is sensible.

I did get killed by corals recently. I had swum under a tiny piece of wreckage to look for loot when 2-3 corals growing in there simultaneously started shooting darts at me. This took me by surprise, and due to the stress I couldn't find the (easy to see) way out before my health had dropped to zero. What an embarrassing demise.

Another time I got killed by a leech.

A while ago a major patch was released for Subnautica. I didn't notice any obvious improvements during my recent playthrough, instead I got new bugs. The most serious one (also confirmed by other players) makes your exosuit get stuck on the ground. If you save and restart the game, the exosuit will then bounce around like crazy, eventually breaking through the entire geometry. The solution seems to be to get out of the suit as soon as the game loads, which makes it calm down right away.

Another bug drains oxygen tanks while theyre in your inventory. When my primary tank has 30 seconds worth of oxygen left I normally switch to a backup, but often the backup tank isn't completely filled (as it should). Even worse, I sometimes forget about time and use up the backup tank too, but if I then desperately try to switch back to the primary tank and use those remaining 30 seconds, that tank it's suddenly empty as well.

Subnautica: Below Zero

https://unknownworlds.com/subnautica/subnautica-below-zero-price-increasing-on-pc-storefronts/

"Subnautica: Below Zero is getting closer than ever to being ready for launch. We are aiming to release 1.0 in the early part of 2021 – as some of you might have guessed from our Nintendo Switch announcement – but still have bug fixing, optimizing, and further fine-tuning to do before it’s ready for launch on all platforms.

With the release on the horizon, we will be increasing the price of Below Zero to $29.99 (USD) across all PC storefronts (Steam, Epic, Discord, Humble) on January 5th, 2021."

I think Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero: are both on my Steam Wishlist. You gave some favorable reviews on Subnautica. I guess if the price is going up on Subnautica: Below Zero, I won't be buying it for some time. I generally only buy Games on sale with deep discounts.

---QUOTATION---

In Subnautica I just read that you can sleep to pass time while plants grow or batteries recharge. Sounds like cheating to me.

---END QUOTATION---

Why would that be cheating? If batteries are such an important and necessary resource, to go out exploring and doing things, wouldn't it make sense for both the Player and the batteries to "re-charge" over the passage of time? I mean what else would you do after you've eaten ( is there eating? ) gone over your gear or other processes. Do you just sit there and look out the window waiting?

Well, what's the point in the game having slowly recharging batteries if you can just skip the wait? Why not let them recharge instantly in the first place? Note that sleep is not necessary in the game (you never get tired). I guess it could make some sense if crafting a bed was difficult somehow, but I don't remember that being the case.

I use to make two sets of batteries, exactly so that I don't have to wait. When out swimming around I use one set, while the other is recharging back at the base. Growing food might be an even better example, because you may risk starving while the plant is still growing, forcing you to plan ahead.

Both games are worth full price. Also check that you don't have ARK already, I got mine free on Epic.

The differences between them are:

In ARK animals are your biggest threat, in Subnautica it's drowning and dehydration.

ARK seems much bigger, both in playing time, area size and number of animals. Subnautica's gameworld instead has much more vertical (deep sea) topography, so the total "volume size" may even out between the two games.

ARK has more realistic graphics, while Subnautica's colors seem a bit childish at times (but you get used to that, and it still looks very nice).

It should. I got The Long Dark in Early Access and even though it's been many years ago, they just keep producing new content year after year.

Still waiting for this to go on sale 40% or better. I've got 37 Steam Games on my Wish List and not a single one of them is on sale.

To me the character in the trailer looked like something from an animated movie meant for small children. The actual game may not be in the same vein, of course.

Original Subnautica soundtrack free for Subnautica owners

https://unknownworlds.com/subnautica/subnautica-below-zero-original-soundtrack-out-now/

"Also, for the first time, the original Subnautica soundtrack is available to purchase from Steam.

To make the soundtrack more readily available, we’ve moved the soundtrack from the game itself to additional content. If you already own a copy of Subnautica on Steam, you will automatically be credited with a free copy of the soundtrack to download. You can find and download this directly from the game listing in your Steam Library."

Playing it, I really miss the gorgeous tropical setting. I always found beautiful spots for my bases in the first game, but here there is no great place I'd want to be in.

Well, is that new? Between Subnautica's pacifism and Below Zero's character diversity, it seems fitting.

I think you can have both pacifism and diverse characters in games for better reasons than virtue signalling (though there were signs of the latter already in Subnautica).

But I also suspect wokeism leads to a toxic workplace, stifled creativity and lowered productivity. Not even management will then be safe from accusations of not being woke enough, which is likely the real reason for adding those things on his Twitter profile.

Maybe he just means what he says. I don't see why he would not deserve to be given the benefit of the doubt. There is no group anyone can join that will automatically make them above reproach, so sometimes you will get terrible people even in groups with positive aspirations. There were some in a few other places with similar messages but it doesn't mean there will be any at Unknown Worlds.

Subnautica

Subnautica has been on my Steam wishlist for years.

The best deal I've ever seen has never been better than 20% off.

There's a huge sale going on right now on many items I have listed.

Subnautica is 50% off. I finally bought it.

Subnautica's pacifism

Actually I wouldn't call Subnautica pacifist. I must have killed and eaten hundreds of little fishes (plus a few dozen I hit with the submarines). It's just the larger creatures that are harder to kill. Maybe one could call the game darwinistic.

This gave me an idea, would it be possible to play Subnautica without killing a single creature? May have to try this some time. Maybe if one gathered as many emergency rations as possible before the spaceship wreck blows up, then survived on them while getting a crop plot going. But perhaps gathering Cave Sulphur would count as indirect murder, Cave Sulphur also seems required for both the Repair tool and the Laser Cutter.

I thought it was funny but very accurate that the first Game recommended was The Long Dark that I've been trying to get you to try.

After seeing the screenshot of Subnautica: Below Zero in that previous article, I was wondering if the sequel went "woke"?

Indeed it's one of the few choices on the list that makes sense. Raft, The Forest and Minecraft may also fit; but hardly Abzu or the rest as far as I can tell.

It appears so, judging from this eloquent review:

---QUOTATION---
"Being inclusive is not political. Playing as a woman is not political."
Thats what one of the developers replied to a customer complaining how much effort they put into race and gender, while blatantly ignoring real issues with the game.

Shoving the sexuality (and sexual preference - WTF kids play this game too!) of protagonists, how strong they are for women and how diverse the characters are, that all your white and male characters are either dumb, goofy, gay, evil, corrupt, stupid and useless down the throat of people is the very definition of politics and makes your game propaganda.
...
Not to mention, the way you portrayed these "inclusive" characters made them extremely unlikeable. They are incompetent, arrogant, overly aggressive, cant control their emotions, unfunny, cringy, narcissistic, insecure and stereotypical in general. So what picture are you trying to paint here in any case? Is that supposed to be inspiration for POC and females? You only look like the devs of TLoU2, who tried to be woke and then made the worst people POC and/or female, made you kill doggies and horses, made the vast majority of the people you need to kill POC and female and to top it off even added a Jewish character who has a huge nose.
Bravo. Congratulations. But thats what happens when you force something without even understanding it. Politics after all.

This one was funny that I read from your link:

"The plot is mind-blowing. A black lesbian developed a vaccine that a super-advanced alien couldn't, killed herself by accident. Her sister (you) resurrects the alien that destroyed at least 4 human ships (Degasi, Aurora, Sunbeam, Mercury II) killing dozens of humans, called for help but still killed the first human trying to locate them because "Lil wanted to know too much about Architects"."

I'm not aware of that, as I've only played the Sandbox mode that came out first, of which I joined at least 6 years ago ( the original reason I finally gave in and created a Steam account ) and it has no other people.

However the Story Mode that came out in the last year or two, has other people and is most likely the source for what you say. I have not tried it, don't know anyone who has and most of my friends love the Sandbox mode for the lack of other people. Someday I may give it a try but as it stands, the Sandbox mode has several new levels I have yet to see. Do you have a link for what you are saying?

Some Game Developers think being inclusive and diverse is the way to broaden their audience, but if they enact it at the expense of others, or should I say if it is done poorly or comes across like pandering, they can lose more people than they gain. Likewise I have a lesser desire to ever buy the Subnautica: Below Zero after reading all the complaints on how awful it is compared to the original Game.

Actually, all my free time with the exception of brief internet interludes like this, is currently spent learning and studying about amateur or "ham" radios.

No, I am not interested in building my own equipment. I'm interested in buying equipment that is NOT made in China and therefore low quality. I'm not interested in buying the Chinese junk that is very common over here. I'm buying prebuilt systems that are high quality and made in Japan.

I've started off with some handheld units, mainly from the perspective of survival equipment that you can take outdoors and go into areas where you may lose cell phone coverage but still have "ham" handheld radio communications through the various short wave, VHF and UHF bands. I bought a mobile unit for my vehicle but finding a place to fit it has become more difficult than I anticipated.

I want to get a much nicer home-based model that does everything, but that's not going to be cheap. Anyone can buy this equipment and listen, but in order to transmit you have to get a license and that's what I am studying for. To answer your question if it's still a viable community, I would say yes, all over the world. In fact, a good percentage of it has moved to digital and is done in conjunction with using Computers to assist the programming and other features. It is not a cheap hobby by any means and that's why some people start off with buying the Chinese junk like Baofeng.

What about Military surplus, or does functional such equipment fetch collector's prices?

I've occasionally read about radio amateurs chatting with people across the world, before the Internet this sounded like pretty geeky stuff. I can imagine both cost and license requirements act like thresholds to ensure a higher intellectual standard among the participants, kind of like the earlier days of the Web.

Technology has moved so fast in the Amateur radio field, that old technology is essentially useless unless you like to collect old junk. Imagine it similar to keeping up with Computers to play the latest Gaming titles. Likewise, the Military, for the most part only gets rid of stuff when it's really old and outdated when it comes to electronics.

One of the biggest changes took place in 2007, when you were no longer required to learn and transmit, hear and reply to Morse Code messages. That was a huge impediment to getting a License, and since that was dropped the number of new people entering the field has increased every year in the US since 2008.

However as older generations enjoyed the contacting people around the world and talking to them, more recent events of natural disasters and man-made events has made younger generations interested in disaster and emergency preparedness and service. So, I guess why not both?

I feel like we should be having the conversation on another post like the Survival, Prepping & Defense but I guess that's the way it goes sometimes.

Right after I made the previous post, this popped up in the News:

IS THE GAME UP FOR BAOFENG IN EUROPE?
