I really hope this Elk survives after puting that effort into it. Most humans would be face-down after that.

The Zoo Tower in Berlin

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoo_Tower

The Zoo flak tower...was a fortified flak tower that existed in Berlin from 1941 to 1947. It was one of several flak towers that protected Berlin from Allied bomber raids. Its primary role was as a gun platform to protect the government building district of Berlin, in addition the Hochbunker (blockhouse) was designed to be used as a civilian air-raid shelter. It also contained a hospital and a radio transmitter for use by the German leadership, and provided secure storage facilities for art treasures.
...
As the bombing continued, the facility was also used to store art treasures to keep them safe. The Zoo tower in particular stored the Kaiser Wilhelm coin collection,[4] the Nefertiti bust, the disassembled Altar of Zeus from Pergamon, and other major treasures of the Berlin museums.[10]
...
The heavier 12.8 cm FlaK 40 anti aircraft guns obliterated Soviet armour, particularly when hitting it from the side.[15]

With thousands of civilians crammed into the facility, conditions in the Zoo tower towards the end were close to unbearable; it was crowded and had little water, and the air was hard to breathe.
...
The two towers resisted all attempts to destroy them by air attack and ground forces. They withstood the heaviest Soviet gun, the 203 mm howitzer.[16] Even after the war, with full access and planned demolitions, only the Zoo tower was completely destroyed.

Duga radar

This was very interesting.

---QUOTATION---
"Amid growing fears of nuclear war some claimed that the low-frequency "Russian signal" could change human behavior and destroy brain cells.

Was there a connection to the nearby Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant? It's speculated that the doomed facility was built in the particular area in order to provide the enormous radar with energy.
Supporters of this idea point out that the Duga radar cost the Soviet Union twice as much as the power plant, despite its questionable military capabilities.

The explosion at Chernobyl on April 26, 1986 was the beginning of the end for the Duga array. The complex was closed due to the radiation contamination and its workers evacuated..."

This above seems to be the inspiration for much of the Stalker SoC plot (a bit ironic though that the Duga Radar itself didn't fill any function when you approach it in Clear Sky's Limansk level). The pile of decoders in picture 10 look interesting too.

So basically they thought they'd be able to use it like a toxic radioactive dump site & save a few quid, not taking Global Warming into account as we weren't as aware of it back then.

There's another radioactive dump on some Pacific island where they put a big concrete dome on top of it & now they're worried it's leaking out, Now I think about it I might of read about that one in this thread?.
