Board Games ( & other non-electronic mediums )

I like all types of games and not all of them are electronic.
Here's a new one I got from Amazon and a video review I found:

a couple of examples:

I've gotten more and more into board-games (again), as I've grown older - used to play Necromunda, Warhammer Quest, Warhammer 40k (epic), Hero's Quest, Space Hulk, etc. back in the days

these days, I mainly play Arkham Horror, whenever I can get it properly set up (I have the base-game and all board-expansions, just missing two 'deck-expansions')

https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/arkham-horror/

it's based on Howard Philips Lovecraft's universe, where the Elder Gods have awoken and are about to take down Arkham, among other places and it is up to you, as the player (alone, or with friends) to gather enough equipment, close enough 'gates' and make your way through the various dimensions, in order to gather the artifacts that may help shut all the gates, less The Old One awakens (several Elder Gods available, all which whom will effect the game)

in Arkham Horror, you are basically playing 'against the board itself', so to speak - as you draw 'instance-cards', etc., representing events occurring in-game, sort-of 'rpg-lite', but without a game-master

if you want to play with all expansions, etc, you need the space, time and patience for it though:

https://youtu.be/LIVaN78PeIw

my main issue at the moment is creating boxes for all the cards and tokens; I do have rudimentary solutions, but they're not optimal - and also I have three cats.

apart from that every once in a while, when having friends over, we'll play Chez Geek

http://www.sjgames.com/chezgeek/

it's a card-based game, where you are basically a bunch of students sharing a flat (true U.S. college -style) trying to make money and buy as much stuff, whilst doing as little as possible (the one who 'slacks off the most' wins)

it's a fairly interesting game, suitable for 3+ players and takes about 20-30 minutes to play - good fun, depending on preference

Lord_Santa~

Thanks for the links. I've seen several of the Arkham Horror series and
have come close to buying one of them but haven't yet. It's good to hear
that you like them. I like anything that's based on H.P. Lovecraft's works.

BoardGameGeek.com - the end all, be all site for your board-game pleasures:

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/

Vassal:

http://www.vassalengine.org/

"What is Vassal?

Vassal is a game engine for building and playing online adaptations of board games and card games. Play live on the Internet or by email. Vassal runs on all platforms, and is free, open-source software."

Vassal is awesome, albeit finicky (i.e. takes time to set-up proper), but it let's you simulate/emulate, basically any and all board-games out there - worth a look, if nothing else if you are planning to purchase a new board-game, but are hesitant as to how it all looks/plays and would like to get a 'feel' for it, before spending the money.

Why Heroquest is so Great

Hero Quest was an old board-game ('rpg-lite' ), released back when - I used to play it in the early mid early 90's and found it quite thrilling

this guy really makes the case, though:

I actually have Hero Quest and I think one of the expansion packs
stored away with some other Games. Milton Bradley always made
some quality games in the 20th century. Might be worth something:

https://www.amazon.com/Milton-Bradley-4101-HeroQuest-System/dp/B000MVTUBM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1512358608&sr=8-1&keywords=heroquest

Another Milton Bradley Game I owned and loved was "Fortress America".
A Game where the Soviet Union, aided by Marxist South Americans &
like minded Asians invades the US from 3 sides. Sound familiar? It's
basically like the movie "Red Dawn" ( 1984 ) since it came in 1986.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fortress_America_(board_game)

https://www.amazon.com/Fortress-America-United-States-Adventure/dp/B000TBL22A/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1512358865&sr=1-1&keywords=fortress+america

used to play day(s) long campaigns of Axis & Allies, as well - once you got a couple of players going, it can be a real challenge:

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/98/axis-allies

also, I didn't realize that Hero Quest had reached those insane prices - then again, as long as they don't do reprints, it may be no wonder...

This was a great board game I had back in High School. It was pretty
cool because it didn't use dice and had some unique strategy game play.

Another Board Game I had back when it came out was made a lot
more popular by the movie that came out many years later. I knew
about it because I had read the book and thought it was a cool story.

Another game I had in the "3M Bookshelf Series". Great game, sort
of like a combination of playing chess but with topographic barriers.

Pathfinder ( 1974 )
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/2884/pathfinder

I got this game when it first came out. It works sort of like "Battleship"
with each player with a playing board that you hide from each other.
Instead of placing ships in an ocean, you build a maze on a grid system
and hide a token. Each side keeps moving until they hit a wall and then
they switch turns. You place red discs down to show where each side has
moved and the first one to reach the hidden token wins the game. This
was actually a lot of fun building a more complex maze than your opponent.

Anyone snag one of these during their short availability?

STALKER: gra fabularna (2015)
https://rpggeek.com/rpgitem/174528/stalker-gra-fabularna

They came unannounced. They were gone without a single word. All that was left was traces of their presence.

STALKER is a complete role-playing game based on the novel "Roadside Picnic" by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. Set in a near future, in a year 2014. The world if ruled by international corporations. Alien artifacts of incredible and incomprehensible powers are being extracted from the Zones surrounding alien landing sites. There are stalkers, who enter the Zones and bring back alien objects, defying corporate monopoly and ownership of extraterrestrial technologies.

The rulebook contains the rules, setting description including alien artifacts, an introductory scenario and rules regarding the use a special deck of STALKER cards.

STALKER is a long lost Polish game that was announced at the end of the year 1996. It was to be published with a permission from Boris Strugatsky by Wydawnictwo S.R., at a time a publisher of Strugatskys' works in Poland. Unfortunately the publisher encountered financial difficulties and the game was never released.

STALKER resurfaced after almost 20 years. The text of the game along with almost all original illustrations (apart from a set of card deck art which was lost) was published i February 2015 as a free PDF file under Creative Commons BY-NC-SA licence.

This was certainly a surprise as I thought the opposite view of this ( which would be those that espouse political correctness ) would be the ones to try and make a trendy card game. Looks funny. Not so sure the mechanics would work out smoothly.

Lost and alone, you must survive and escape the woods. There are 5 different scenarios from inexperienced hikers lost in the woods to a rescue party trying to find a lost person. You will have to deal with animals, finding food and water, mother nature and sickness without dying to win.
