Console recommendations

Thanks Santa,

I will have to ask what kind of games they're playing, but I've only heard about sports game so far. I think the console is meant as a gift for the youngest one (aged 11), but obviously the siblings will use it too.

Can you also play games from the existing PS3 on a PS4? Then they may not need the old PS3 console anymore, and can get some money from selling it. Speaking of which, is it worth it to buy a used console, or do used ones tend to have hardware problems?
---END QUOTATION---

unfortunately the PS4 is not backwards-compatible with the PS3, instead Sony has opted to allow users to pay for and sign up to a service called 'Playstation Now' (https://www.playstation.com/en-us/explore/playstation-now/) which gives access to a wide range of PS2, PS3 [and] PS4 titles (streaming service, so it does depend on your connection, as well) - which I personally find a bit... 'annoying', but I guess it's in vogue to stream these days

apart from that the PS4 and XBoxOne are basically the ones running the show and all 'major' titles will usually be available for both (there will of course be exclusives, as well) and as such I don't think there's going to be any issue in finding per example EA's latest sport -titles and such (the Playstation (online) Store is very easy to navigate with a huge selection of titles readily available, if one prefers not having phsyical copies)

I buy used consoles 99% of the time - the two Xbox 360's that I bought new in store both gave me RROD (Red Ring of Death), while the PS4 I have that I bought 'second-hand' a few years back is working perfectly fine

I've been told that some PS4's can seemingly have issues, but I've never experienced them myself and a friend of mine has his running basically 24/7 (he's a GTA V nut) without issues, but with that in mind; it's still always a gamble to buy used electronics, so it's a good thing to make sure everything seems legit beforehand

Console recommendations

A friend's kids (aged 11-15) are asking for a new gaming console (currently they have a PS3, I think). Which one would you recommend for children that age span?
---END QUOTATION---

it (partly) depends on the parents' view on gaming and partly depends on the kids' preference in gaming

from what I have gathered (without children of my own that age), it seems as if though Fortnite per example, is 'more than just a game' - i.e. it seems to be the de facto place for 'teens/kids' to 'hang out'

Fortnite is available for all consoles (XboxOne/PS4/Nintendo Switch) - the issue being that the Nintendo Switch isn't as powerful as the other consoles, nor a PC and as such, even though you are able to 'cross-play' with PC and PS4/XboxOne (if you have a Nintendo Switch), due to the Switch's limitations, you are only able to play with others who are playing the game at 30FPS - and as such, when joining servers, there will be a harsher limit on those who have a Nintendo Switch

Rocket League is another excellent example of cross-platform gaming and a great example of an 'all age-limits' kinda game - the game itself being football (soccer) with cars, basically - fast-paced and fun (IMO)

Nintendo has 'always' been the go-to company when it comes to kids, but given the current landscape in gaming and given the age of the 'kids' in question, perhaps a PS4 would be easier to recommend as it has a wide user-base, nice selection of peripherals (such as motion-controller/Virtual Reality and a few other gimmicks), a whole lot of games available cheap (due to having been on the market for quite some time) and you get free games (PS4/PSN (<-'N' = 'Network') as a subscription bonus every month - also you can install the various HBO/NetFlix/Whathaveyounot on the PS4 'without any hiccups'

XboxOneX has more power than the PS4Pro and the PS4Pro has more power than the PS4, etc. but if you ask me, a used PS4 (standard) and an external 2GB HDD (said HDD cost about 100€ in Sweden) would be quite a safe bet for kids going into their teens - the main costs will be the external HDD and an extra controller, but apart from that I believe that there's enough games aimed at their age-group to go around and they will still be able to join any Fortnite match, while at the same time parents can use the HBO/Netflix part of it and have the console itself act as a media-center

(do keep in mind that I do not own the XboxOne, but I do have six original Xbox's and have had 3 Xbox360's (I bought into XBox from launch 'til XboxOne) - I have absolutely nothing against the Xbox, nor Microsoft when it comes to consoles, but I find the XboxOne to be... the least interesting of the current bunch)

Dirt VR Playstation 4

so, I bought a PSVR headset about a month ago and have been playing Dirt Rally VR with it, which was all fine and well with a controller, but it wasn't until I tried it with a racing-wheel with pedals, gear and stuff (just my plain office-chair, but still) that I truly 'felt' the VR experience and basically tried to cover my face every time I ran off the road

once I've gotten a little more money put together, I'll be buying myself a decent setup so that I can race - this footage is not from the PSVR, nor PS4 version of Dirt VR; but merely to illustrate the sensation itself (since I didn't capture any footage and... well it's kinda pointless trying to show VR in 2D )

given the limitations of the PS4 (graph0x-wise and such), it was still plenty enough immersion to make me jolt (my friend who is an experienced driver, as well)

also, I'm posting this to keep the front-page somewhat 'free' from all the bots currently invading:

https://youtu.be/jVLPO6A5Hx0

and yes, I also have my PSVR hooked up to my PC via a complex series of BS software and yes, it works quite fine. I'll try to do a little write-up in the VR-thread, once the front-page gets too cluttered, if nothing else

I was hoping RDR2 would come to PC. Sadly not? I think we'd of heard something by now if it was. I've got a PS4 and an Xim Apex but the mouse movement is too slow for my liking so I'm going to sit this one out and wait until it's on sale in a year or so.
---END QUOTATION---

that's a shame (about the Xim Apex) - fortunately I've learned how to play with controller by now (First Person/Free Aim/Iron Sights/No Radar/Dynamic HUD - just what the doctor recommended)
