Three Mile Island:
Enquiring minds want to know: how do you get fresh vegetables to last during longer expeditions, and how do you get rid of the cooking smells (will activated carbon filters suffice)?
Three Mile Island
I was actually on two different types of Nuclear Powered Submarines.
The first kind I was one carried Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles ( ICBMs ) that the ship left port, stayed underwater for several months at a time being "on patrol", and was ready to launch it's nuclear missiles in the event of World War III or a similar type of activity. This type was called a "Boomer" for the thought that "boom" there goes it's payload. This type of submarine rarely ever visited any foreign ports and after it's patrol returned to the US. We initially took with us fresh vegetables, eggs, milk, meat and other items then once used, switched to things like canned vegetables, powdered eggs & milk and frozen meat.
The second type of Nuclear Submarine I was on was called a Fast Attack. It's job was to attack other ships and submarines in the event of war. While it did have some nuclear torpedoes, it did not carry nuclear missiles. It would go out on short patrols or longer 6month voyages around many oceans. Because it pulled into foreign countries with US naval bases, it was able to resupply itself to replenish things for fresh supplies but would also on occasion use some of the powdered, canned or frozen items.
Both ships "cleaned" their air with CO2 burners and CO2 scrubbers to deal with the air. O2 Generators created fresh oxygen from seawater. They took in H2O, separated the hydrogen from the oxygen and discharged the hydrogen overboard. The filtration system was so good people could actually smoke on the submarine.
