The Punisher (Half Recommendation, Half Review)|
I just finished watching the Punisher season 1. Given Marvel says they are pulling out of netflix it might be the only season we get of it. Have to say, fantastic show if you can handle some of the sillier superhero aspects that come with the turf.
I was expecting them to go the easy route and just have it be a mindless shootemup fest and was getting excited for that. Then when the show comes out it's a look into soldier's lives after war and the struggles they deal with, in a variety of different and some often fatalistic outcomes. The punisher himself, fresh from Daredevil season 2, is a psychological mess with plenty of hallucinations happening randomly of his family happening almost at random.
Every other character in the show is dealing with some sort of trauma, and are coping with it in different ways. As I said, some of these approaches lead to absolute disaster and death. PTSD is a recurring theme of the show, which I notice has it's own thread here now.
Then again, it's also filled with shootouts and super hero antics, just downplayed for a grittier, and bloodier experience. It has a good deal of violence, but I feel the violence is laser focused on this show. It doesn't just have shootouts for the sake of it, it saves them for when the plot definitely demands them. There are entire action scenes where the Punisher doesn't actually kill anyone.
Plus I got to laugh at how in another part of the galaxy a talking tree and a raccoon are having space adventures at the same time people are getting tortured, maimed, and brutally beaten to a pulp in New York. Really shows the range of marvel I guess.
While it might not be their best product, it's very standout. As in, if you don't like Marvel shows, you'll probably still enjoy Punisher. I say the same thing with the Daredevil series even though they are a little more superhero in season 2 especially. Punisher stands out from Marvel products as that one show that the crowd against super hero shows can enjoy still.
Oh yeah, watching Daredevil is optional too, I'd reccomend it though, it's pretty great. The cemetery scene with Punisher explaining his past to Daredevil is one of my favorite scenes in Marvel, simply because of how well acted it is.
Opinions may very, but that was mine I guess. Also boy did I really not need to do this whole review thing. Oh well, hope it might convince you guys to check it out. If you saw it, let me know what you think but keep spoilers in check for those who didn't see it.
I'm back baby.
