"Sliver" is a song by American rock band Nirvana, written by vocalist and guitarist Kurt Cobain. It was originally released as a non-album single in 1990 by the band's then record label, Sub Pop. The same recording was re-released by DGC on the compilation album Incesticide in December 1992, and a music video for the song was released to promote the album.

"Sliver" was written in 1990. According to the 1993 biography Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana by Michael Azerrad, the song was written during a rehearsal with Dan Peters, who briefly played drums with Nirvana while the future of his own band, Mudhoney, was uncertain. According to Azerrad, the lyrics to "Sliver" were written shortly before they were recorded, although an acoustic demo of the song, first released on Nirvana box set With the Lights Out in November 2004, suggests that Cobain had written some of the lyrics before entering the studio to record the vocals. "I decided I wanted to write the most ridiculous pop song I had ever written," Cobain explained to Azerrad, in order "to prepare people for the next album," which became their 1991 release, Nevermind.

Much of the song was recorded by Jack Endino at Reciprocal Recording in Seattle, Washington on July 11, 1990, during a studio break by the Sub Pop band, TAD "We called Tad up and asked if we could come over and record the song," Cobain recalled in a Melody Maker interview with journalist Push in December, 1990. "We used their instruments while they sat around eating. But that's nothing new...the key to a successful album is to get the fuck out of the studio before you're sick of the songs." With Peters on drums, the band recorded the song's music in less than an hour. Two weeks later, on July 24, Cobain returned to the studio and recorded his vocals as well as additional guitar with Endino, who then mixed the track.

Cobain was pleased with the recording, telling Azerrad, "It has a massive naïveté to it. It was done so fast and raw and perfect that I don't think we could capture that again if we decided to rerecord it. It's just one of those recordings that happened and you can't try to reproduce it.

Unlike most Nirvana songs, "Sliver" was recorded in the studio before it had ever been played live. Its live debut was on September 22, 1990 at the Motor Sports International Garage in Seattle, the only show that Peters ever played with the band. "Sliver" also represents Peters' only appearance on a Nirvana studio recording. Cobain was happy with the time Peters spent with Nirvana, telling Azerrad, "The chemistry was definitely there...We could have ended up writing some really good songs together." As Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic explained, however, "If Dan were to have joined our band it would've been certain that Mudhoney was finished, and we didn't want to be responsible for that."

The final live performance of "Sliver" was at Nirvana's last concert, at Terminal Einz in Munich, Germany on March 1, 1994.

According to Azerrad, "Sliver" contains the most literal lyrics that Cobain ever wrote, telling a seemingly autobiographical story of a boy who is left with his grandparents by his parents for the day, has a difficult time eating dinner and playing, insists on being taken home until he finally falls asleep after eating ice-cream and watching television, and later wakes up in his "mother's arms." Despite the straightforward lyrics, the song was given an intentionally confusing title, with Cobain explaining, "I had a feeling if I called it 'Sliver,' most people would call it 'Silver.'"

A music video was made for the song in March 1993 to promote Incesticide, although the album had been released several months earlier. The video was directed by Kevin Kerslake, who had also directed the videos for the band's three previous singles, "Come As You Are," "Lithium" and "In Bloom." The video starts with Cobain's infant daughter Frances Bean Cobain dancing to the song's bassline, held by Kurt from behind while his arms were sticking out of two holes he cut through a piece of cardboard, then switches to the band performing the song in Cobain's garage. The video shows Dave Grohl on drums, although he does not appear on the track. Cobain does not play guitar in the video, only singing into a microphone while wearing a red and black striped sweater his wife, Courtney Love, had bought for him from a fan after a Nirvana show in Belfast, Northern Ireland, due to its likeness a sweater worn by one of Cobain's influences, English rock musician John Lydon. Cobain's garage itself had been decorated with toys, posters and artifacts he had collected over several years, and kept in storage since before Nevermind was recorded in May 1991. Among the items featured in the video is a Chim-Chim toy which had been given to Cobain by the Japanese rock band Shonen Knife as a present.

The video was accepted by MTV in May, but frames featuring the logos of the magazines Maximumrockandroll and Better Homes and Gardens had to be removed due to the network's rules on product placement.

Nirvana: Incesticide ❖ Sliver ( Track 2 )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QECJ9pCyhns

Mom and dad went to a show
They dropped me off at Grandpa Joe's
I kicked and screamed, said, "Please, don't go!"

Grandma, take me home
Grandma, take me home
Grandma, take me home
Grandma, take me home

Grandma, take me home
Grandma, take me home
Grandma, take me home
Grandma, take me home

Had to eat my dinner there
Mashed potatoes and stuff like that
I couldn't chew my meat too good

Grandma, take me home
Grandma, take me home
Grandma, take me home
Grandma, take me home

Grandma, take me home
Grandma, take me home
Grandma, take me home
Grandma, take me home

Said, "Why don't you stop your crying?
Go outside and ride your bike."
That's what I did, I killed my toe

After dinner, I had ice cream
I fell asleep and watched TV
I woke up in my mother's arms

Grandma, take me home [19x]

I wanna be alone

"Been a Son" is a song by American rock band Nirvana, written by vocalist and guitarist, Kurt Cobain. It was originally released on the Blew EP in December 1989. A second studio version appears on the compilation album Incesticide, released in December 1992.

Written in 1989, "Been a Son" was first recorded in the studio in September 1989 by Steve Fisk at Music Source in Seattle, Washington. Of the five songs recorded, only two were officially released, with both "Been a Son" and "Stain" appearing on the Blew EP in December 1989. The session was Nirvana's first time recording on two inch, 24 track tape, and Fisk recalls that "when it was all over with, we played 'Been a Son' really loud on the big stupid speakers three times and stood up on the client tables in the back room and danced."

"Been a Son" was first performed live on October 8, 1989 at the Lif Ticket Lounge in Omaha, Nebraska, the show at which Nirvana also debuted the future Nevermind song, "Breed." On September 25, 1990, Cobain performed a solo acoustic version of the song on the Boy Meets Girl show, hosted by Beat Happening vocalist and guitarist Calvin Johnson, on KAOS (FM) in Olympia, Washington.

A second studio version of "Been a Son" was recorded for the BBC program The Evening Session by Miti Adhikari, at Maida Vale Studios in London, England on November 9, 1991. It was released on Incesticide in December 1992.

"Been a Son" was rehearsed for Nirvana's MTV Unplugged appearance in November 1993, but cut from the set list prior to the show.

The Fisk-recorded version of "Been a Son" was re-released on the band's first greatest hits album, Nirvana, in October 2002. Prior to this, this version had only been commercially-available on the Blew EP, which had only been released in the United Kingdom and in limited numbers. Kurt St. Thomas called this version the definitive take, because it better displayed Nirvana's signature thrashing guitar sound and featured a bass guitar solo prominent in the mix.

"Been a Son" represents one of Cobain's earliest comments on the issues of sex and gender. In his 1993 biography Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana, Michael Azerrad described "the instantly catchy" song as being about "the plight of a girl whose parents would have preferred a boy." Jenn Pelly of Pitchfork described it as "a comment on how patriarchy sees women as second-class citizens, on how it dictates what it thinks women should be."

"Been a Son" has been cited as one of the earliest examples of Nirvana's more melodic direction following the release of their 1989 debut album, Bleach. As author Chuck Crisafulli noted, Cobain suppressed his pop influences during the band's earliest years, but after the release of Bleach, he became more outspoken and confident about professing his love of John Lennon and the Beatles during interviews. Fisk, who produced the first version of the song, said that the recording featured "Total Lennon harmonies, right out of Rubber Soul". Azerrad wrote that Cobain's vocals were "draped in most un-Sub Pop-like harmonies," a reference to Nirvana's then-record label, best known for their heavier grunge sound that defined most of Bleach, with the exception of "About a Girl." English musician Tim Arnold described the song as part of Nirvana's post-Bleach "political thrust to the top of the charts."

In his review of Incesticide for Allmusic, Stephen Thomas Erlewine cited "the terrific forgotten indie pop tune 'Been a Son'" as one of the compilation's highlights.

In 2015, Rolling Stone named "Been a Son" the 23rd best Nirvana song in their No Apologies: All 102 Nirvana Songs Ranked list. In 2019, The Guardian ranked it at number 11 on their list of Nirvana's 20 greatest songs.

( originally by Devo )

Take a step outside yourself
And you turn around
Take a look at who you are
It's pretty scary
So silly
It's Revolting
You're not much
You can't do anything

Take a step outside the city
And you turn around
Take a look at what you are
It is revolting
You're really nowhere
So wasteful
So foolish
Poppycock!

Who said don't look back?
Don't believe 'em
Go for that crazy sounding restaurant
'Cause they're gonna try and get behind you
Don't you let them do it
You know what I'm talking about?
You hear me talking?
You hear me talking!?

It's pretty scary, it's so revolting [x4]
Naaaah !

Take a step outside the country
And you turn around
Take a look at what you are
It is amazing
Take a good look
You're no big deal
You're so petty
It's a laugh

Take a step outside the planet
Turn around and around
Take a look at where you are
It's pretty scary

"Candy"/"Molly's Lips" is a vinyl-only split-single from the American rock bands The Fluid and Nirvana. It was released in January 1991 on Sub Pop records and includes two live tracks: "Candy" by The Fluid; and "Molly's Lips", a cover of a song by The Vaselines, performed by Nirvana.

"Candy" first appeared on The Fluid's 1990 EP, Glue. The EP was re-released on CD in 1993 along with their 1989 album, Roadmouth.

"Molly's Lips" was recorded live on February 9, 1990, at the Pine Street Theatre in Portland, Oregon. It was written by the Scottish band The Vaselines about Molly Weir, according to band member Eugene Kelly, presumably because her Rentaghost television character Hazel McWitch typically appeared in whiteface with emphatic red lips. According to Michael Azerrad's 1993 Nirvana biography Come as You Are: The Story of Nirvana, the band's singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain was opposed to the release of the track, feeling that this version was not strong. However, the single constituted part of the band's buyout deal from their former record label, Sub Pop Records. "Candy/Molly's Lips" was Nirvana's final release on Sub Pop Records. The word "Later" is etched into the single's run-out groove. A remix of this version of Molly's Lips was included on the 2009 reissue of the Nirvana debut album Bleach.

Nirvana also recorded a studio version of "Molly's Lips" on BBC Radio 1 for John Peel in October 1990 during drummer Dave Grohl's first recording session with the band. It appeared on the 1992 tour EP Hormoaning, and was included on the rarities compilation Incesticide. This version was released as a 12" vinyl promotional single in Brazil, to promote Incesticide.

The single was only released on 7 inch vinyl, and in limited numbers of 7500. The first 4000 copies were pressed on green swirled vinyl, the final 3500 pressed on black vinyl. Counterfeit versions of the single also pressed on black vinyl exist, but can be distinguished from the real version as the matrix number is different. The live version of "Molly's Lips" by Nirvana was exclusive to the single, though was subsequently released on the 2009 Bleach reissue. The single is also notorious for being The Fluid's most famous release, due to the fact it was split with Nirvana and exposed them to a wider audience.

In 2017, to mark what would have been Kurt Cobain's 50th birthday, the Phonographic Performance Limited released a list of the top twenty most played Nirvana songs on the TV and radio in the UK in which "Molly's Lips" was ranked at number eighteen.

Son of A Gun is the debut extended play single by Glasgow alternative rock group The Vaselines. The title-song of this EP came to a wider audience after a Nirvana Peel session version of it, along with "Molly's Lips", was released on their compilation album Incesticide. "You Think You're A Man" is a cover of a song written by the cult-film actor Divine, while the other two were written by Frances McKee and Eugene Kelly.

Nirvana: Incesticide ❖ ( New Wave ) Polly ( Track 8 )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euqdJRKbMdg

Polly wants a cracker
I think I should get off of her first
Maybe she wants some water
To put out the blow torch

It isn't me
We have some seed
Let me clip
Your dirty wings
Let me take a ride
Don't hurt yourself
I want some help
To please myself
I've got some rope
You have been told
I promise you
I have been true
Let me take a ride
Don't hurt yourself
I want some help
To please myself

Polly wants a cracker
Maybe she would like more food
She asks me to untie her
A chase would be nice for a few

It isn't me
We have some seed
Let me clip
Your dirty wings
Let me take a ride
Don't hurt yourself
I want some help
To please myself
I've got some rope
You have been told
I promise you
I have been true
Let me take a ride
Don't hurt yourself
I want some help
To please myself

Polly says her back hurts
And she's just as bored as me
She caught me off my guard
It amazes me, the will of instinct

It isn't me
We have some seed
Let me clip
Your dirty wings
Let me take a ride
Don't hurt yourself
I want some help
To please myself
I've got some rope
You have been told
I promise you

Why doesn't she need him for a father?
Not only maidens can occupy my shack
Goring my manhood turns a man off
Like Pepe LePew would say,
Hey, hey, hey! -- and then we clash!

I got my diddly spayed [x3]
I got my diddly

She laughs about it
Shrinking inflections if the wind blows just right
Jacking themselves off polyester
I wanna jump, this isn't right!
Hey, when am I getting it back?

I got my diddly spayed [x3]
I got my diddly

I don't know why,
I've got a joke too silly to say
Don't touch the balls
I got a dick, Dick -- hear my fucking hate!

I got my diddly spayed [x3]
I got my diddly

If you're wondering, it's gaining monthly
Fiberglass insulated, the sky is cotton candy
Spawning downstream, El Rancho Ovulate
Feeling can't help me romp

Bill just fuck me, take me anal
Billy's slit reminds me of someone
I'm sick of paying for the love boat
Tony and Tenille say wanna jump rope
And I say look!

I got my penis spayed,
I got a little tail,
I got my dingaling spayed
I got my dingaling spayed
I gotta be around pussy
Don't let me fall
I got a heh-heh ... well you can't live

We got my dingaling spayed [x6]
I got my dingaling spayed [x5]
I got my diddly

Act out of loyalty
Defend every country
Wish away the pain

Hand out lobotomies
To save little families
Surrealistic fantasy
Bland, boring, plain!

Hold me down is restitution
Living out your date with fusion
Is the whole fleece shunning bastards?
Don't feel guilty masturbating

Somebody said that they're not much like I am
I know I can
Make enough of the words
You go along I sing a song

Sickening pessimist hypocrite master
Conservative Communist apocalyptic bastard
Thank you dear God for putting me on this Earth
I feel very privileged in debt for my thirst!

Hold me down is restitution
Living out your date with fusion

All the gels and cremes it is pertaining

Hope it's only ah, a yeast infection

Oh well, it burns when I - it hurts when I pee
Oh well, it hurts when I - it hurts when I see

Now I vomit cum and diarrhoea
On the tile floor like oatmeal pizza
Fill my toilet bowl full of a cloudy
Puss, I feel the blood becoming chowder rust

Oh well, it burns when I - it hurts when I pee
Oh well, it hurts when I - it hurts when I see

Roll into my bed which does consist of
Lice, bugs and fleas and yellow mucus
Stained dirt, vaseline, toe jam and booger
Stomach acid worms that dance in sugared sludge

Mmmmm ...
