The End of Offtopic

The end of Offtopic as the Wild West of the forum has come, with a new amendment to the forum rules finally drawing the border lines:

https://gsc-game.com/main.php?t=community&s=forums&mode=register&action=view_rules

Make sure to read them, then keep having fun!

Its interesting to compare our amendment with the one at the Russian part of the forum, which just lists various punishments.

It is mostly because enough people here are mature and capable of handling themselves that we can practice this "small government" approach.

is it allowed to, within the context of one's character, use minor profanities as to define a point

per example:

if at the Zoner's & Loner's I would use the F-word, within context

*Lord_Santa walks in, heavily soaked in mud and rain*
*sits down by the bar and mutters to himself*
what a F-in' day....

I do minimize the use of profanities not only on-line, but in real life as well; but in certain situations, I find it appropriate to use a profanity

I do realize that this forum has some people, whom may be offended by such use of the word, but as we are all mature individuals here, I'd reckon there'd be no greater harm done in throwing in the word within context of a given situation?

the only reason I'm asking is, as you may know, that I don't always think before exclaiming such words, but I rarely use it in an offensive manner

So how courteous must we be to our fellow stalker, should we be British courteous? French courteous? Italian courteous? Hippy courteous? May I please shoot you in the face courteous?

Also you have to love Russia, I can imagine if you look at Russian laws it just shows various punishments and sentences and a little note saying
"expect that you will be punished for stuff"

Why is the world so paranoid about offending people, I assume this is just an expansion of the conspiracy of the lawyers that is the basis of why people don't do what they want.

Because they can get sued.

Everyone is afraid of being sued so they obey every law that gets passed onto them, and now its spreading the internet as people are censoring or making rules mainly stating that you must be courteous and do not make any personal statement of your beliefs about any other person or persons, despite it being a human right to tell some annoying person off (or it should be).

Hell look at B.Net 2.0, you cannot express any view, good or bad without receiving anything from a warning to a ban to Blizzard actually altering or censoring your statement.

The freedom of our internet is becoming less and less free...

Wow! Looks like the Russian forums are pretty rough, they got 37 strong rules instead of our 18 little basics. My 2 favourites:
- Criticism of the rules-based actions moderators.
- Advocacy of terrorism, violence.
Makes one value the peaceful harmony we enjoying this side...

I know Gaminator has some strong rules about dissing admins/mods/staff or Gaminator in general, even outside the forums. If caught, you get banned. Also I've seen mods ban people "by their own desire." They even write it as the reason they banned the person, in his sig. I don't get that. How can you ban someone, just because you desire to do so? Maybe I am missing something? I don't know.

Exactly

One of the main point of the added "offtopic amendments" is to verbalize the expectation that every user be able to take responsibility for what they post - and do that without an angry moderator peeking over their shoulder or just out of fear of being banned.
Once it's been made clear what's expected from you, it's much easier to take it as guidance, is it not?

ED:
Wait, exactly how are the regulations stating that -
1) the offtopic areas have specified but less strict rules than the main forum
and
2) you're trusted to do your thing mostly without constant moderator supervision (as opposed to only controlling your behaviour because you know someone's watching to punish you and/or clean up after you)
and
3)stating when moderator-specific tools apply and when they do not
- making the internet less free?

Hypothetically:
if it was information that i had not already posted all around myself (which in this case i have) then i would ask in return: why would you rather not let me (or anyone for that matter, if it was their personal details) correct the assumption if i so choose?
Or - why would you be so reluctant to ask the other person "is it OK to share this?"

I personally find it rather unfair if somone, say, has remembered or acquired a bit of information about someone else ("I know what your name is!" I know where you live!" etc.) and goes around spreading it to everyone as some great oracle or in-circle buddy without considering - or asking - if that person whishes this information to be shared. (Think of the excited parent telling the visitors all about your teenage self for example. Charming, isn't it?)

It would be (in my eyes) a different matter, though, if it was referring/linking to the information someone has indeed previously posted in the forum.

Btw.
Just because the expectations/boundaries are spelled out doesn't make them tighter. It just makes them known and clearer. (I personally insisted the points of "ask before you share someone else's information" and "let everyone speak for themselves" to be incorporated to the "Offtopic amendment".)

Russia has evolved so they don't need to know rules anymore, they just need to know that there is a punishment.
---END QUOTATION---

The U.S is the same way. arguing rights is just a waste of time. Freedom of speech is more or less the freedom to complain, because they are just going to punish us anyway. And they will punish us for complaining too. After a while you just don't want to say anything because you just become a target for harrassment. So in the end they get what they want. They do what they want and keep us quiet.

News networks dictate everything and they are worse than the government when it come to questioning their dictation.

Citizens aren't much better. People want their rights yet they don't want anyone else to have rights. So everyone is guilty of it.

The internet has been changing. About ten years ago you could do whatever you pleased (within reason) and if a user had a problem with that they could just go eat shit & die, because nobody cared. Now since the governments and media have taken over the net scensorship is at an all time high. Scensorship exists to do more harm than good. It gives the dictators excuses to block or erase whatever they don't want you to see. Do you think they care if you see foul language? No, but they do care if you see negative opinions regarding them. Scensorship exists to protect their reputation, their exposure. Everything else that comes with scensorship exists to disguise it's true purpose. Scensorship is damage control/containment. The blocking of rude or fould language is the disguise.

Foul and rude language is a very small price to pay for freedom. People like to throw around the word maturity yet they they like dictate and play games with freedom.
