an update to that question, as this article on RPS was released today:

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2018/12/14/mutant-year-zero-stalker-inspiration/

(they had a talk with the developers ^^)
---END QUOTATION---

That confirms what you wrote earlier. Post-apocalypse sure goes back further in time than the last decade's computer games --could it even be that GSC Stalker has been influenced by the Mutant universe?

Mutant could have 'existed somewhere in the periphery' of the developers, but the original was (to my knowledge) never translated into any other languages, so it seems more likely that they have drawn inspiration from various sources within the 'genre', much like Mutant

Upcoming games/releases

No doubt the Mutant RPG in 1984 AND G.S.C.'s Games in the early 2000s were both mainly influenced by the STALKER movie in 1979 which was distributed around the world. While Roadside Picnic is the point of origin for the movie, it was released in Russian in 1972 and not in English until 1977. It was an obscure short novel with no where near the exposure of the movie.

Resident Evil 2 releases in 2 days & it's available for pre-load now

^^ A heads up for anyone looking forward to this. I also found some info on what the main dlc's going to be about, It's copy pasted below,

I enjoyed the 30 minute Demo they put up on Steam, It was short but sweet & if it's anything to go on the game's going to be polished out the gates which is nice.
Another feather in it's cap for me is that it has ultrawide support unlike RE 7 which was the first Resident Evil game on this engine.
We've got a good few months coming up for game releases, With this, Metro in February & others like the big Civ VI expansion & Rage 2 we'll be kept busy for the first half of 2019.

[spoiler]

There is going to be DLC in three parts called ghost survivor featuring 3 characters from the game ---- shameless copy/paste

The Ghost Survivors will be a side story that focuses on three survivors

The Ghost Survivors will include randomized scenarios, an enemy unique to the game mode, and a shop where players can purchase items with points they earn in-game. We’ve reached out to Capcom for more details.
and its free apparently, names removed to avoid spoilers

A good review, I'd read people complaining about how long it is but this fella has been given it early to review & according to him there's plenty of content, It's a decent review with a lot of short clips so there's SOME MINOR SPOILERS IN THE VIDEO but not anything that's going to impact what you know when it comes to playing the game as he's been careful not to give clues to puzzles or info on the changes, The spoilers will come from having played the original but, he said it also has plenty of new content to keep you on your toes.

ATOM RPG

https://youtu.be/OzjqZM7IUjA

in lieu of personal experience with the game, I give you an excerpt of 'the' review from RPGCodex:

"First, let’s address the enormous, almost embarrassingly fat elephant in the room before proceeding. The elephant that, before now, I have tried not to glance at too often.

ATOM RPG is exceedingly postmodernist. Actually, I’m fairly certain that it’s the most conventionally postmodernist game I have ever played. Virtually its every aspect is a citation. Its source may be an old Soviet song, a socialist realist film, an actor from the era of Perestroika, a novel written by a dissident, a controversial public figure, an internet meme (yikes), or Fallout. A lot of Fallout. At its most surface level, mechanically and story-wise, ATOM is made of Fallout. It’s got its own Iguana Bob, Richard Grey, The Followers, Rad-X, Vaults, FEV, the BoS, etc. Whether it’s part of the nostalgia motif, a set of homages, or plagiarism is for you to decide, but I think it fits the game’s fever dream feel very well.

It’s not Fallout 2, however, where the elements of its first part were deconstructed to inspect them from a different perspective, but rather a boxful of stuff to play with. In Atom Team’s hands, the borrowed material is clay to create a statue of Lenin with, tear it down, and then make a million other things following the same scenario. It’s playful, lively, and not preachy in any way.

A fair warning, though: like with any PM text, to enjoy ATOM fully, you’ll probably need to play it in Russian and be quite a prestigious Codexer who is no stranger to the 20th century Russian culture. Half the game’s population talks in direct quotes from literature, songs, films, or Soviet clichés. Knowing Sorokin, Yerofeyev, Zinovyev, and Shalamov is a must. Otherwise, you’ll be doomed to giggle at jokes about bigots assuming someone’s hunger level for the 40 to 50 hours required to finish the game. Which is funny enough, I guess, but the game’s main strength lies within the bounds of its literary exercises."

RAGE 2: 9 Minutes of New Pre-Beta Gameplay (2019) PEGI

https://youtu.be/nE6BnVrWwjU

if you ask me, Rage (1) had potential, the issue (of course) being that id software's been left to run by complete incompetents and the only 'interesting person' left on-board was John Carmack and even-so his only field of specialty is (basically) making the engine and all the 'cool features' of it, while John Romero used to be the one who'd deliver 'the goods' (in my opinion), but since he left a long, long time ago (after Quake 1) and Quake 2, 3, 4 and all the other shovelware that id kept puking out afterwards has been 'technically impressive' and Quake 2 and 3 have some interesting enough multiplayer, but apart from that, they've basically gone straight downhill in terms of... 'content'

with Rage (1), I felt that at the very least they tried to go in a different enough direction, even though it was just the Fallout bandwagon that had currently gotten going with the release of Fallout 3, back when - but even so they failed utterly at making Rage anywhere near as compelling as it suggested itself of being; having just enough lore and promise on the horizon to keep the player going, but at the same time being hampered by incompetents, who know little to nothing about designing a 'deep' world, but rather were merely able to provide the coating of the very same

here's hoping that Avalanche will be able to take that a couple of steps further; I own Bulletstorm w/ the Duke Nuke'm expansion and find it entertaining enough - very formulaic, but fitting for its genre, so I'm hoping they'll be able to create at least something from the shell of a game that Carmack & Co. built

Generation Zero

Looks Interesting.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtvVuF3dE1c

https://store.steampowered.com/app/704270/Generation_Zero/

The thing that'll put me off is if they make it online only for the single player part, I haven't seen anything on it but I get a feeling it is.

Dirt Rally 2.0 has made the single player campaign online only.
Gran Turismo Sport is another that has which is very contradictary to what they promoted to be it's Xbox killing feature on release. I know it's meant to be different when it's the game doing it rather than the console but is it really? Gran Turismo is a Playstation exclusive.
