Strange, Weird & Unusual Places

Three Mile Island~

Hey, can you delete those other two posts since you've combined them here on a post that we can keep adding to? Thanks.

I've always been fascinated about stuff like the two subjects you've posted about. Military, Historical and/or Urban Exploration topics have always been personal interests of mine.

Had you heard about those crazy tunnels in Odessa, Ukraine or that poor girl that died down there?

Oh, didn't know you could delete topics (despite being a forum member for a decade). I could only find one of them, maybe Don Reba took the other one.

Never heard of the Odessa tunnels before.

Here's a fascinating South African cave: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rising_Star_Cave#Discovery_of_fossils_in_"Dinaledi_Chamber" --Looking at the cross-section, it seems odd that people would have dragged dead bodies all the way in there. Maybe they simply got lost one at the time over the centuries?

If you enjoy claustrophobic cave exploration I can also recommend this fantasy novel: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/876771.Styx

Three Mile Island~

That's a fascinating link about that Cave. The thing I always think about is their primitive means of lighting. You have a torch and nothing better. If it goes out and you can't get it relit, you are truly screwed. Especially in a Cave like that with it's narrow passages and it's steep incline dropping into the final chamber.

You just don't realize how crazy exploring that is in ancient times until you see this video:

First Look Inside the Fossil Cave (Expedition Update) | National Geographic

Imagine going in there with the thought your lighting could go out at any moment, especially if there's a strong air current blowing it out.

Yes and that's even assuming they did use torches. I suppose fire was known at the time, but creating a torch might be more complicated than making a fire for say cooking. Then you need to carry that torch somehow while climbing down the pits. OTOH, maybe blind prehistoric individuals could make themselves useful as cave explorers, being blind making them better at navigating total darkness.

When I was a child we played hide and seek in a large pitch black basement, and even in rooms we were familiar with from before the light was switched off we quickly lost orientation in the dark. And those rooms were just simple rectangular shapes, with straight walls and a horizontal floor.
